Vera Porter

Vera Porter was born on September 19, 1932 to the late Earnest and Willa Maddox in Buena Vista, Georgia. She departed this life on January 17, 2018 at her home in East Stroudsburg, PA. Vera moved to Newark, NJ as a youngster and attended Newark Public Schools, graduating from Newark Girls Vocational High School where she excelled in fashion design. Known for her elegant fashion shows, Vera planned, choreographed, designed and made all of the clothes, garnering rave reviews from the local newspapers. She opened her fashion and clothing alterations businesses in Newark, East Orange and South Orange New Jersey. Many of her clientele were celebrities and socialites in the greater New York and New Jersey area. She retired in December of 1993. Vera is survived by her husband Sherman Porter, her children, Gregory Tyson (Kathy), Tashan Granger, Sheldon Porter (Sonya) and Karen Garmony (Desmond); grandchildren, Givonie, Christina (Chidiebere), Mario Jr., Darion, Xavier, Alana, Cameron and Isaiah; great grandchildren, Olanna and Ozioma. She also leaves to mourn sisters Lela Griffin, Mary Thompson, and a host of other relatives and friends.
