Shirley A. Merring, a beloved figure in her community and a dedicated educator, passed away on July 16, 2025, at the age of 89 in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Born on July 19, 1935, in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, she left an indelible mark on all who knew her through her passion for teaching and her commitment to her local real estate ventures.

Shirley was a graduate of Quakertown High School and of East Stroudsburg University, where she exemplified leadership as the captain of the field hockey team. Her educational career spanned several years, during which she inspired countless students and colleagues alike. Following her teaching career, she transitioned into real estate, becoming a respected realtor in her community, known for her dedication and professionalism. She worked at Water Gap Country Club for 20 years in various positions. Shirley was inducted into the Pennridge-Quakertown Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.

Beyond her career, Shirley was an avid reader who cherished quiet moments with a good book. She also enjoyed walking and had a special fondness for cats, reflecting her gentle spirit and love for all living creatures. Her active engagement in life extended to her community involvement as well. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi International, a ladies' cultural, social, and service organization since 1977, as well as various local real estate associations. Shirley was heavily involved in the Alumni association at ESU. Shirley was also a devoted member of the former Grace Lutheran Church in East Stroudsburg and more recently, Saint John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stroudsburg.

She is survived by her loving family: her son, Mitchell "Mickey" Merring; daughter Michelle Merring Wilgus and her husband Mark; grandchildren Taylor Merring, Austin Wilgus, and Brandon Wilgus; and her sister Diane Ising and her husband Duane. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Austin and Charlotte (Weaver) Neas and stepfather Morris Todd.

A memorial service to honor Shirley A. Merring will be held on Saturday July 26, 2025, at 11:30am at Saint John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 9 North 9th Street, Stroudsburg with Pastor Elizabeth Koerner officiating

Shirley leaves behind a legacy of compassion, education, and community service that will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege to know her.
