Sherman Porter

Sherman Porter of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania entered into eternal rest on December 14, 2025 at the age of ninety-five. He was a husband, a father, a grandfather, a great grandfather, a brother, an uncle, a cousin and a friend. Bom on January 2, 1930 to the late Samuel and Rachel Porter in Jackson County, Florida, he was one of twelve children. After relocating to Newark, New Jersey, Sherman attended Newark Public Schools. He graduated from Newark Vocational High School, where he was a member of the basketball team and actively participated in various school activities and organizations. In 1951, Sherman enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving with distinction and achieving the rank of Sergeant before his Honorable Discharge in 1955. Shortly after returning home, Sherman proposed to Vera Maddox. They were married in 1957 and raised four children. Sherman loved to travel. The Caribbean Islands, Bali, and Greece were among his favorite destinations. An employee of Capital Lighting for 45 years, Sherman was a top salesman for the company. An artisan, he created light fixtures and crystal chandeliers in his free time. Sherman is survived by his children, Gregory Tyson, Tashan Granger, Sheldon Porter (Sonya) and Karen Garmony (Desmond); grandchildren, Givonje, Christina (Chidiebere), Mario Jr., Darion, Xavier, Alana, Cameron and Isaiah; great grandchildren, Qlanna. Ozigma and "Chibueze". He also leaves to mourn sisters Viola Lacosta, Mattie Denson-Silas, Lue Bertha Browning, Jeanette Broadnax, and Evelyn O'Neal and brothers Elisha Porter and Charles Daniels, and a host of other relatives and friends. Sherman is predeceased by his wife Vera Porter, two brothers Waley, Harkeem and Elijah Porter and two sisters lona Morrison and Mary Tucker. Sherman was a gentle soul who touched the lives of everyone he came in contact with. He will be sorely missed. His love and sense of humor will forever be remembered.
