Roy Edward Pipher, 76, died October 21, 2016 in Stroudsburg. Born December 26, 1939 in East Stroudsburg, the son of the late Norman Russell and Ruth Emma(Werkheiser) Pipher. He graduated from Stroud Union High School in 1957 and received a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from East Stroudsburg State College in 1962 with majors in Social Studies and English. At East Stroudsburg he was a member of Sigma Tau Delta, the national English honorary society. He received a M.A. degree in English from Marshall University, Huntington, West Virginia, in August 1964, where he was a graduate assistant, teaching in the English department. He took additional undergraduate and graduate courses in English and film history at the University of Kentucky, the University of Scranton, City College of San Francisco, East Stroudsburg University, and Kings College. During the fall semester of 1963, he taught 10th and 12th grade English at Randolph Central High School, Randolph, New York. From January 1964 until may 1968, he taught English at Harford County Community College, Bel Air, Maryland. From September 1968 until his retirement in June 2002, he taught English at Luzerne County Community College in Nanticoke, PA. During a leave of absence, during 1981-82 academic year, he worked for West Bay Health Systems Agency in San Francisco and returned to San Francisco in the fall semester to work as a free-lance word processor. Following his retirement, Mr. Pipher devoted himself to doing research for his book, A History of the Movie Theatres in Monroe County, PA which was published in July of 2010. Roy is survived by brother Robert and two nephews, and his cousins son Mark Garrahan. As per Mr Pipher’s request, there will be no services and his cremated remains will be scattered.
