Obituary

  1. Robert R. Wert, 90, of Stroudsburg, died early Sunday morning at home, August 30, 2026 due to
  2. complications of a stroke, with his family by his bedside.
  3. Born on December 6, 1935 at home in Catasauqua, Pennsylvania, son of Raymond E. and
  4. Mildred G. Wert, he was a 1953 graduate of Catasauqua High School where he excelled in
  5. baseball, basketball and football.
  6. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and a teaching certificate from Elizabethtown
  7. College. While in college he played baseball, basketball and soccer and was later inducted into
  8. Elizabethtown College’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
  9. He began his teaching career at Pennridge High School upon graduation from college in 1957,
  10. where he taught English and coached football and basketball. In the fall of 1957 he was hired
  11. by Stroudsburg Area School District to teach English and also to be the head basketball coach
  12. where his teams excelled for the next five years. Then in 1963 he decided to get his Master’s
  13. Degree in School Counseling at Lehigh University and took a counseling and coaching position
  14. at Sayre Area High school, where he had much success and championships in the basketball
  15. arena.
  16. However after three years at Sayre he and his family, now with three young children, decided
  17. to come back to Stroudsburg in 1966 and once again began college counseling at Stroudsburg
  18. High School which continued for some 30 more years until he retired in 1993.
  19. Bob also decided to stay active in sports by refereeing high school and college basketball games
  20. and spent about 20 years as the president of the Stroudsburg Chapter of PIAA Basketball
  21. Officials. He also was elected to the Stroudsburg School Board after retiring from teaching and
  22. was president of the board for 5 of his 6 years on the board. Along with his very busy schedule,
  23. he was an avid hunter and fisherman. His favorite trips were his fishing trips to Canada with his
  24. son and grandson.
  25. What we will remember most about our devoted husband, dad, and grandfather was his great
  26. sense of humor and his ability to make everyone laugh. He was friendly with everyone he met
  27. and seemed to know someone no matter where he went. He would go out of his way to make
  28. life easier for others, always putting others before himself, especially when it came to his
  29. family. He touched so many lives in his 90 years, and will be missed by so many.
  30. Surviving are his wife, the former Sandra Jean Reichard, who was his high school sweetheart
  31. and who he married 69 years ago, just one day after graduating from college, and their children
  32. Dr. Jeffrey Wert of Bethlehem (Gail), Robin Henriksen of Stroudsburg (Daniel), and Kathy
