Picture Robert “Bob” William Philips Sr., 94, of Stroudsburg passed away at Grace Park on Saturday December 16, 2017. He was the husband of the late June M. (DeHaven) Philips, who died December 16, 2004. He was born August 7, 1923 in Stroudsburg, the son of the late Herman and Nettie (Marsh) Philips, and was a lifetime resident of Stroudsburg. Bob was a member of Saint John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Stroudsburg. He was a member of the Stroudsburg Volunteer Fire Department Station #38, Phoenix Company #2; for more than 70 years , serving 3 terms as Chief. He served on the Stroudsburg Boro Zoning Hearing Board and was a Stroudsburg Boro Councilman for may years; He was a founding member of the Gooseberry Hollow Rod & Gun Club in Pocono Township; and was on the Board of the Salvation Army. In addition, he was instrumental in the formation of the Monroe County Control Center where he served on the Board of Directors since it’s inception. Prior to his retirement he worked as an Industrial Engineer at Bear Products in Bangor, he also worked at Oil Jack Manufacturing, and the former Worthington Mower. He is survived by his son Robert W. “Sandy” Philips Jr. and his wife Joanna of Norton Shores, Michigan; his granddaughters Mehridith Venverloth and her husband Jon of Atherton, California, and Julie Clark and her husband Matt of Ankeny, Iowa. 6 great grandchildren, Grace, Caitlyn, Julia, Elle, Ben and Austin. He is also survived by his brother Millard “Skip” Philips and his wife Judy of Stroudsburg; and many nieces and nephews. Bob was predeceased by his brothers, Lloyd Marsh, Thomas Philips and Richard “Dick” Philips. Memorial funeral services will be held on Saturday December 23, 2017 at 6:30pm at the Bensing-Thomas Funeral Home, 401 North 5th Street, Stroudsburg with Pastor Brian Nichols officiating. There will be a visitation from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at the funeral home. Cremation was private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Philips Family Fire Technology Scholarship Fund, Northampton Community College, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem PA 18020, which was set up to honor Bob.
