Reverend Bruce K. Boyles, 84, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, August 2, 2024. A
resident of Stroudsburg, PA, he passed peacefully with family at his side after a courageous
struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Bruce was born in Ronceverte, WV, on May 20, 1940. Coming from an area without many
means, his community pulled together to send him to West Virginia University for his
education. He graduated from WVU with a Bachelors in 1962 and a Masters in 1964, both in
Chemistry. WVU is where he met his future wife, Brenda C. Todd, and they were married on
June 2, 1962.
Bruce’s scientific career spanned many years, including 20 years as senior chemist at Allegheny
Ludlum in Tarentum, PA. At the age of 56, he answered the call to enter the ministry after many
years as a lay pastor, and he received his Masters of Divinity from Pittsburgh Theological
Seminary in 1996. He served at Cove Presbyterian, Sinking Valley Presbyterian, Lower Spruce
Creek, and Water Street Evangelical Church, from which he retired in 2017.
Bruce was an avid golfer, a diehard Mountaineers fan, and a fisherman with the patience of
Job. He had a great love for bluegrass and gospel music, which gave him comfort in his final
days. He was a master of family crossword battles and he never let a good dad joke go to waste.
He had a heart for service, changing lives through his compassion and prayer.
After 62 years of marriage, wife Brenda has laid Bruce in the arms of Jesus. Bruce is also
survived by daughter Cathy Klingler of East Stroudsburg; Joe Boyles of Portland, OR; and three
grandchildren, ages 18, 16, and 15. The family sends many thanks to the staff of Spring Village
Memory Care and Compassionate Hospice for their kindness and dedication. In lieu of flowers,
the family requests that any donations in Bruce’s name be made to Water Street Evangelical
Church, P.O. Box 114, Alexandria, PA 16611. A service for the celebration of Bruce’s life will be
held in Tyrone, PA, at a later date.
