Marshall J. Schuon, a long-time newspaper editor and writer, died of cancer surrounded by loved ones, Tuesday, May 24th, at his home in Tannersville, Pa. He was 80 years old. Mr. Schuon retired in 1994 from The New York Times, where he wrote the paper’s automobile column, About Cars, for many years. After retirement, he continued to write about cars, trucks, and transportation issues. He was also a deputy editor of The Times National Edition and a founding editor of the Science Times, the weekly science and technology section. Before that, Mr. Schuon worked for a number of newspapers, including Newsday on Long Island, The Allentown Morning Call, The Boston Record American, the Bethlehem Globe-Times and The Allentown Evening Chronicle. After retiring, Mr. Schuon and his wife, Loleen, moved to Tannersville, where they dealt in antiques and collectibles at Pocono Peddler’s Village. He was a man with many hobbies, his wife said. He had recently added a classic Corvair convertible to his collection of vintage cars, and he had a big room in the house just for his train set. He loved the birds, bears, foxes, and deer that wandered through, and resided on, their Tannersville property. He often posted photos and videos of the wildlife for his many friends on Facebook to enjoy. In the 1950s, he served the Navy in Operation Deep Freeze in Antarctica, where he went to journalism school. Born in Allentown, Pa., he was the son of Karl Schuon and Carrie Marshall Schuon. He is survived by his wife, Loleen Cartwright Schuon, a daughter, Jonalyn, and her husband, James Kindall, a son, Jay, and his wife, Michaela Scapan, a brother, Joseph Schuon, two sisters, Lucia Desocio and Marie Andersen, and six grandchildren, Henry, Caleb, Hunter, Travis, Patrick and LJ. Private services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The United Way, the Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center and the Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center.
