June Edythe (Haney) Smith, 97, of Stroudsburg, PA, joined the almighty Lord in Heaven on December 29, 2019 at the Whitestone Care Center. She is survived by three children: James Smith of Horseheads, NY, Joel Smith of Stroudsburg, PA, and Sara Smith-Katz of Stroudsburg, PA. She was known lovingly as "Grandma" to five grandchildren: James Smith Jr., Hillary (Smith) Sommer, Justin Smith, Elizabeth Katz, and Hannah Katz. She leaves behind four great-grandchildren. June was born on June 1, 1922 in Tannersville. She grew up on the family Haney Farm, as one of fourteen children during the great depression. She moved to Horseheads, NY in 1943 to work at a WWII Holding Point, as part of a support team for the war effort. It was there she met LaVergne Smith, her husband of 56 years, until his passing in 2000. Together they owned the Schanaker's Diner and South Main Auto Car Dealership in Elmira, NY. She was a founding member of the Horseheads Calvary Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. June was a talented musician, who played the Hawaiian guitar, often singing on the local radio station in Elmira, NY. She spent many of her days nurturing her garden and writing beautiful poetry. She was an incredibly caring and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was never seen without a smile on her face, and did nothing without love in her heart. She will continue to be loved and missed dearly. However, comfort can be held in knowing she is now joyful to be home with her family departed before her. Services will be held on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at 3:00 PM at the Stroudsburg Weslyan Church. She will be laid to rest alongside her beloved parents and siblings at the Tannersville Union Cemetery.
