Joseph Fleming Sr, 97, of Stroudsburg died on Wednesday September 13, 2023, at home.

Born in Wyoming, Luzerne County, PA in 1926, he was the son of the late Frank and Noreen

Fleming (Harrington) of Kingston, PA. Joe was a lifelong resident of the Stroudsburg area and

was a member of class 1944, but left for the service at the age of 17, upon his return he graduated from

Stroudsburg High school in 1946. He was a loving husband for 65 years to Gladys Fleming

(Greiner), predeceased 2013.

He served in the US Navy on the USS General A.E. Anderson, a Troop Transport ship from

1943-1946. In 1988 he retired from Hughes Printing Company of East Stroudsburg, where he

worked for 41 years. He was Secretary/Treasurer of the Pressman Union while working at

Hughes. He continued to monitor and connect with Union membership after his retirement to

regularly contact members and their spouses of their benefits.

Joe is survived by 3 daughters: Joanne Campbell and her husband Dennis of Vacaville,

CA., Judy Kohlmann and her husband Bill of Phoenix AZ., and Janice Schweinfurth and her

husband Jeff of Sebastian, FL. Three sons; Joseph E Fleming Jr., Jack Fleming, and his wife

Linda, and Jim Fleming and his wife Laurie, all of Stroudsburg. Joe (Pop Pop) is survived by 13

grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Joe was preceded in death by a daughter Jayne Fleming in 1982, and sister Marilyn McMullan-

Rosato, and brothers Robert Fleming of Stroudsburg and Richard Fleming, from Anchorage

Alaska.

Joe was an avid bowler and was actively involved with his kids and grandkids sporting events.

You could hear his voice bound over all the others. He continued his support for his grandchildren.

by being at and cheering their accomplishments. He was a volunteer to St. Luke’s Church and

many funeral homes for services and Burial Mass. He regularly dedicated his time and services.


to make sure others were comforted. Joe and Gladys were present as Election officials for

decades for Monroe County during every election and never missed his chance to vote.

Joe was elected to the Stroudsburg School Board in 1978 and served for many years. He was

elected as a Stroud Township Supervisor in 1986. While a Township Supervisor, he was

appointed as a Board member of the Stroud Township Sewer Authority.

He was a lifelong member of the Church of St. Luke, Stroudsburg, and the Church of St. Matthew’s East Stroudsburg.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at 10:00am at the Church of Saint Luke’s 818 Main Street, Stroudsburg with Father Michael F. Quinnan as celebrant.
