John Tarhovicky - born August 22, 1926 – died September 10, 2024
Born in Zahor, Czechoslovakia (present Slovakia). The family came to the United States when
John was about two years old. They lived in Swedeland, PA, where he was one of ten children.
While in high school, he worked at Johns Woods Company in Conshohocken, PA.
John joined the Navy in February or March of 1944 and went to boot camp at Naval Training
Station, Sampson, NY. He was in “Dewey Company”. Then went on to Davisville, RI for SeaBee
(Naval Construction Battalion) training. John served in the Philippines as part of the 93rd
Construction Battalion. He went on to serve in Guam in the supply depot, before heading home
to the states.
John worked for Upper Merion and Plymouth Railroad, then on to Pennsylvania Railroad for
many years.
John married in 1958 to his wife, Shirley, who preceded him in death.
John and his family enjoyed vacationing in the Poconos before moving here in the early 70’s.
They also enjoyed spending time in Chincoteague, VA.
John worked for the Housing Authority of Monroe County until his retirement in the late 80’s.
John was one of the founding members of the East Stroudsburg Youth Association and enjoyed
coaching football for many years.
John is survived by his four sons, Gerald, John Drew, Bruce and Owen, his grandchildren, his
great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, one sister and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, from 5 pm to 8 pm at Bensing
Thomas Funeral Home, 5 th Street, Stroudsburg, PA.
