John S. Kovacevich, 75, of Greentown, passed away on Friday December 1, 2017 at the Regional Hospital in Scranton. He was the loving husband of Elaine (Stefanidis) Kovacevich, they were married for 48 years. Born August 9, 1942 in Clifton, New Jersey, the son of the late Paul Mark and Margaret (Reindl) Kovacevich. He was a resident of Pike county since 1999 and prior to that of New Jersey most recently in Wayne. He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the Army for 2 years and transferring to the National Guard for another 4 years. John was a member of the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Stroudsburg. He was a board member and Past President of the Breezewood Acres Community Association, he was also a Past President of the White Beauty Estate Association. John served the Breeezewood Acres Volunteer Fire Department for the past 30 years, being fire chief for the past 10, he also served as the assistant fire chief, and was an EMT. He was also involved in the Wayne New Jersey Police Athletic League He loved to travel to Greece where he owned a home on the Island of Chios. He was and avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association Prior to his retirement, he worked at Swepco Tube Corp in Clifton, New Jersey for 21 years, where he was the shop stewart for Union Local #427 IUE-CWA-AFL-CIO In addition to his wife, John is survived by his 3 daughters, Gail E. Bellias-Carr and her husband James of Lincoln Park, NJ, Pamela Ann Looney and her husband Edward of Flanders, NJ and Joanne Strauss and her husband Nicholas of Wayne, NJ; his grandchildren Amanda Noleau and her husband Mikael, ,Nicholas John Strauss and Edward Nicholas Looney, and his great grand daughter Tessa Carris Noleau. He is also survived by his brother Paul Kovacevich and his wife June, and his sister Johanna “Tinny” Lipani and her husband Tommy, and many nieces and nephews, and his good friend Clark Sabo. Funeral services will be held on Saturday December 9, 2017 at 10:30am at the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, 135 Stokes Avenue, Stroudsburg with Father Theodore D. Petrides officiating. Burial will follow in the Greek Section of the Stroudsburg Cemetery. There will be a viewing on Friday December 8, 2017 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at the Bensing-Thomas Funeral Home, 401 North 5th Street, Stroudsburg.
