Jean Elsie Field, 81, passed away on Sept. 29, 2019, in Stroudsburg. She is survived by her husband, Robert W. Field; three sons, Richard, Jay, and Chris; a daughter, Colleen; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Jean was born on April 27, 1938, in Bowmanstown, to Cleatus and Elsie Nothstein. She was a member of Bowmanstown’s Community Sunday School and a member of Ben Salem Church in Andres. She attended Lehighton High School and graduated in 1956. Jean then matriculated to Churchman’s Business School in Easton. She married Robert Field of Stroudsburg, and they were married on Nov. 5, 1960, in Ben Salem Church. They would have been married 59 years this November. Jean graduated from East Stroudsburg University in 1977, summa cum laude, with a degree in Elementary Education. She was a pianist, organist, and choir director at St. John’s Church in Bartonsville from 1965 to 1983. Jean was then the organist and choir director at Shawnee Church in East Stroudsburg from 1983 to 1993. She returned to St. John’s Church from 1993 to 2009, where she was also choir director and organist. From 2009 to 2019, Jean attended Grace UCC Church in Tannersville. She was choir director there for seven years and organist for five years. Jean’s passions included singing, playing the piano and organ, reading, politics, making delicious meals, her faith, and spending time with the extended family. She also loved teaching and was a dedicated elementary math teacher at Hamilton, Arlington, and Morey schools in Monroe County for a total exceeding 20 years. Jean loved teaching children and was an innovative and caring teacher. She only left teaching when her health began to fail, but she was a lifelong teacher and never truly ceased from this calling, even in her housebound final years. All those who knew her will always remember her ready smile, her laugh, and her empathy for those in need, no matter where they were. She will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends alike. Services will be held at St. John’s EC church in Bartonsville on Friday, Oct. 4. The viewing will begin at 9:30 a.m. follow by the service at 11 a.m. There will be a private burial for family members only following the service. Memorial donations can be made to St. Johns EC Church. You can mail donations to: Jay A. Field, 144 Fawn Lane, Haverford, PA 19041.
