Harold W. Ruhl passed away suddenly in his home on Saturday, October 10th. He was known
throughout the community as Bud; to his grandchildren he will forever be Pop-Pop; and to a
cherished few: Howie.
Bud was a beloved physical education teacher in the Stroudsburg Area School District for 32
years. Former students vividly remember playing with the parachute in elementary gym classes,
and the way he drew everyone in with his true love for his students and craft. His teaching
extended into the coaching world. He coached basketball, tennis, and baseball for decades,
effectively influencing thousands of students throughout his tenure. Bud was also a three sport
athlete at ESU. He played tennis; competed on the gymnastics team; and was a member of the
ESU NAIA National Champion soccer team of 1962.
Eclipsing his professional accomplishments, Bud’s love for family was unwavering. He was the
constant in their lives. He was a devoted and loving husband to wife Susan for over 62 years.
His children and grandchildren were his joy. He attended almost every game, concert, and major
life event for each of them. They knew if they looked in the stands, Pop-Pop would be there. His
love of “bad dad jokes” would always put a smile on their faces. His passion for each, his
calming presence, and steadfast nature helped shape each of us. His diner and golf buddies
brought him joy and companionship. He treasured each and everyone of these relationships.
Bud is survived by wife Susan; son Steven (Jessica); Carolyn (Charlie); grandchildren Connor
(Lindsay), Emily, Sydney, Chloe, and Jarod.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 18th from 2-4 at Bensing-Thomas Funeral Home,
401 North 5th, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.
