She was a Watkins Hall scholarship recipient and graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor’s degree in interior design in 1949. After college she taught 4th and 5th grade in Ottawa. In July 1951, she married Bill Hamilton, also a graduate of the University of Kansas. Evelyn and Bill raised their three daughters and two sons in Summit, NJ, where they lived for 34 years, and frequented their vacation home in Stillwater Estates, Pocono Summit. Following Bill’s retirement, the next 20 years were spent at their retirement home adjacent to their vacation house where they hosted many family gatherings. Evelyn had a special love for the Chinese people, culture and art. This keen interest, along with her retirement travels with Bill, inspired Evelyn to earn a Master’s degree in Asian/Chinese Studies from Seton Hall University in 1993. She volunteered at Clymer Library repairing books, believing that the most worn books deserved attention. A talented artist, she expressed herself through watercolors, and also played the violin. Evelyn was an active member of the United Methodist Women, first at the United Methodist Church of Summit, NJ and then at the Mt. Pocono United Methodist Church. She and her husband Bill were passionate about helping others and both assisted with the C.A.U.S.E. food pantry in Jersey City, and later the Monroe County Meals on Wheels.
