Eugene T. Horvat, 76, of Stroudsburg, passed away on Saturday November 7, 2015 at the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg after an unexpected illness. He was the husband of Catherine M. (Veno) Horvat. They celebrated their 53rd Anniversary on October 25th. Born October 25, 1939 in Scranton, the son of the late Stephen and Mary (Walsh) Horvat. He was raised in Dunmore and was a resident of Stroudsburg since 1964. Gene was a Veteran of the United States Navy, serving during peacetime. Gene was very active with the Stroudsburg Volunteer Fire Department, Station #38, Phoenix Co #2 for over 40 years; where he most recently served as President; he also served on several committees and in the rank of 2nd Lt. Engineer and Asst. Engineer. He served on the Stroudsburg Borough Council from 1982 to 1985. He was a member of the Church of Saint Luke, Stroudsburg. Prior to his retirement in 1993, he worked as a maintenance supervisor at M&M Mars in Hackettstown, NJ for over 30 years. Prior to that he was a Bus Driver for NJ Transit Authority and also worked for Protection Services in Allentown PA. After he retired, he worked as a funeral assistant at William H. Clark Funeral Home for many years, and most currently at the Bensing-Thomas Funeral Home. He was a good man, and helped everyone and anybody, especially his neighbors, he will be greatly missed. In addition to his wife, Gene is survived by his son Stephen A. Horvat and his wife Christian of Stroudsburg; his daughter Jean Marie Tretheway of East Stroudsburg. He loved and is survived by his grandchildren, Kaegan Horvat, Alex Tretheway, Maya Tretheway, Megan Horvat, and Jaden Horvat. His brother Dennis Horvat of East Stroudsburg, his sisters Marion O’Shea, Patricia Matay, Mary Ellen Predenkoski and her husband Jude, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Stephen Horvat, Elizabeth (Betty) Selemba, George Horvat, Joseph Horvath, Robert Horvat, Joan Churilla., and Ann Marie Roman. A memorial mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday December 19, 2015 at 10:00am at the Church of St Luke, 818 Main Street, Stroudsburg with Father Carmen Perry as celebrant. There will be a visitation on December 19, 2015 from 9:00am until the time of the mass at the church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the Stroudsburg Volunteer Fire Dept, 700 Sarah Street, Stroudsburg PA 18360 or to the Church of Saint Luke, 818 Main Street, Stroudsburg PA 18360.
