In Loving Memory of Erwin R. Flynn
May 20, 1934 – August 30, 2025
It is with deep love and enduring respect that we announce the passing of Erwin R. Flynn, a
devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and proud United States Marine, who passed away
peacefully at the age of 91.
Born in Columbia, New Jersey, in May 1934 Erwin lived a life defined by duty, passion, and
unwavering love for his family and country. A proud Marine, he carried the values of honor,
courage, and commitment into every facet of his life. His service in the Marine Corps shaped a
man of integrity and quiet strength, whose sense of discipline and respect earned the admiration
of all who knew him.
Following his military service, Erwin built a long and accomplished career as an engineer with
New Jersey Transit, dedicating 43 years of service before retiring. His work ethic and attention to
detail were hallmarks of both his professional life and personal pursuits.
Among his many passions, Erwin was a dedicated traveler, enriching his life with experiences
across the globe, including memorable trips to Germany, Alaska and New Mexico. A lifelong
New York Giants fan, Erwin cheered on his team with pride, win or lose. Game days were
sacred, and his loyalty never wavered, no matter the score. Yet it was photography that became
his true lifelong love—a gift he shared with everyone around him. Whether capturing family
milestones, quiet moments, or special events for friends, his lens reflected the care, love, and
beauty with which he viewed the world.
Erwin was married to the love of his life, Joyce Flynn, with whom he shared decades of laughter,
love, and unwavering companionship until her passing. Together, they built a family rooted in
deep love and connection.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joyce and his parents, John Flynn and Dora Bisbing
Flynn. He is survived by his two devoted daughters, Pamela K. Flynn and Stacy K. Totero wife
of Joseph Totero. His two cherished granddaughters, Melissa Hughes wife of Simon Hughes
and Janet VanHorn wife of Jerrold VanHorn. In addition to four great-grandchildren, Brian
VanHorn, Kaela VanHorn, Megan Hughes and Evan Hughes, who brought endless love and joy
to his life.
Erwin leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and strength. His family, friends, and all those
lucky enough to know him will remember his quiet wisdom, his generous heart, and the way his
photographs captured not just images—but emotions, relationships, and time.
Semper Fi, Marine. You will be deeply missed and forever honored.
