  • Barbara Smith (née Kijesky), 83, of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on September
  • 8, 2026, surrounded by the family she loved so deeply.
  • Born in 1943 in Jersey City, New Jersey, Barbara was the daughter of John and Mary (née Tichko) Kijesky. She
  • was raised in Harrison, New Jersey, where she graduated from Harrison High School in 1961. It was in that
  • same small town that she would later meet the love of her life, Jack Smith. Together, they built a beautiful
  • life, raised their family, and shared 59 years of marriage.
  • Barbara worked for Pechter’s Baking for 30 years before retiring in 2003. In 1991, she and Jack settled in
  • Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, where Barbara's special love for horses became a cherished part of her life,
  • especially through her own horses, Dreamer and Snickers.
  • More than anything, though, Barbara loved her family.
  • Some of her happiest times were spent traveling to Massachusetts to visit her great-grandchildren and to
  • North Carolina to enjoy days at the beach. But for Barbara, the destination was never what mattered most.
  • As long as she was surrounded by the people she loved, she was exactly where she wanted to be.
  • Barbara had an enormous heart for animals. She was an avid cat lover, adored her horses, and never
  • missed an opportunity to give plenty of snuggles to her grand- and great-grand-puppies. She loved to
  • dance, loved to laugh, and had a wonderful way of never taking herself too seriously.
  • She was selfless to her core, always putting the needs of others before her own. Her kindness, patience,
  • gentleness, and beautiful spirit touched everyone fortunate enough to know her. She found joy in the
  • simple things and, most of all, in the people and animals who filled her life with love.
  • Barbara was predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, Jack Smith; her parents, John and Mary
  • Kijesky; her sisters, Eleanor (Thomas) Fitsimmons, Delores “Tootsie” (Joe) Galaro, and Betty (Harry) Graffam;
  • and her brother, Jack (Mary) Kijesky.
  • She leaves behind her beloved daughters, Patricia Smith Mulrenan and Carol Smith, who will carry her love
  • and memory with them always.
  • Barbara was also a cherished grandmother to Jennifer Mulrenan (Katie) and Leeann Coughlin (David), and a
  • proud and loving great-grandmother to her precious great-grandbabies, Gavin, Carly, and Olivia. She is also
  • survived by her sisters-in-law, Shirley Lodato (John) and Teresa Domke (Billy), as well as many wonderful
  • nieces and nephews.
  • Barbara loved deeply, laughed loudly, and made life warmer simply by being in it. Her beautiful,
  • gentle soul will be missed beyond words and loved forever.
