**In Loving Memory of Barbara Lee McElroy
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Barbara Lee McElroy, who left this world on April 25, 2026, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born on January 10, 1945, in Wilmington, Delaware, Barbara's life was a testament to love, faith, and resilience. She was cherished by all who knew her, and her legacy will forever live in the hearts of those she touched.
Barbara was the beloved daughter of the late William and Harriet McElroy. She was blessed with a family that she adored and who adored her in return. Barbara's memory will be forever cherished by her partner, Robert Conaster, and her siblings, Connie Kolasinski and husband Tom, Carol Curland, Shay Lewis and husband George, and William "Mac" McElroy and his wife Trudie, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A devoted mother, Barbara's love for her children was unwavering. She leaves behind Robin Peltz and husband Shawn, Denise Ford and wife Tammy, Michelle "Shelli" McGowan and husband Marty, and Scott Cloud and wife Spring. Her grandchildren, Brandi Niehoff, Alexis Black, Joshua McGowan, Heather Kalinowski, Rebecca McGown, and Sam Hightman, were the light of her life. She also took immense joy in her great-grandchildren Olivia Andrews, Landon Hernandez, Gunnar, Carson, Brodie, and Maddox Niehoff, and Lily and Graham Phillips, each of whom brought her boundless joy. Shane Woodis, her great-grandson that predeceased her, will surely be smothered in her love when they meet in heaven.
Education was important to Barbara, and she graduated from Henry C. Conrad High School. Throughout her life, she found fulfillment in various forms of employment, but her most cherished role was that of a caregiver, where her nurturing spirit truly shone. An active member of Peniel United Methodist Church for as long as her health allowed, Barbara's faith in God was an integral part of her life, providing her with strength and guiding her actions.
Barbara had a zest for life and a myriad of interests. She was an avid reader, enjoyed discussing current events and political issues, a talented crocheter, and found joy in fitness, cooking, and gardening. Her love for dancing, taking long walks, playing games, and spending time with her family was evident to all who knew her. Her sense of humor was infectious, and her genuine caring and support uplifted those around her.
Barbara's warmth and love left an indelible mark on everyone she met. Her legacy of kindness, humor, and unwavering love for her family will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her. As we say goodbye to Barbara Lee McElroy, we find comfort in knowing that she is at peace, watching over us with a smile as bright as the sun.
A celebration of Barbara's life will be held at Peniel United Methodist Church, Newport, Delaware on
June 13, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. with a luncheon to follow in Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in Barbara's name to the Alzheimer's Association, an organization close to her heart.
